Seven Lamps of Christian Virtue

10 Reasons for Christian Discipline

Children thrive best in an atmosphere of genuine love, undergirded by reasonable, consistent discipline. In a day of widespread drug usage, immorality, sexually transmitted diseases, vandalism, and violence, we must not depend on hope and luck to fashion the critical attitudes we value in our children. Permissiveness has not simply failed as an approach to child rearing. It’s been a disaster for those who have tried it.”

                                    James Dobson

“My son, if you receive my words,
And treasure my commands within you,
So that you incline your ear to wisdom,
And apply your heart to understanding;
Yes, if you cry out for discernment,
And lift up your voice for understanding,
If you seek her as silver,
And search for her as for hidden treasures;
Then you will understand the fear of the Lord,
And find the knowledge of God.”

                                      Proverbs 2:1-5

10 Benefits of Christian Discipline

#10 It teaches kids right from wrong:

          Proverbs 22:15
Foolishness is bound in the heart of a child; the rod of correction will drive it far from him.

#9 You will have joy and peace—and be proud of your kids:

            Proverbs 29:17

Correct your son, and he will give you rest; yes, he will give delight to your soul.

#8 It gives kids a bright future:

            Proverbs 22:6

Train a child in the way he should go, and when he is old he will not turn from it.

#7 It makes them wise…

            Proverbs 29:15a.

The rod and rebuke give wisdom,

#6 …and prevents shame:

             Proverbs 29: 15b

But a child left to himself brings shame to his mother.

#5 It won’t kill them…it will save them:

            Proverbs 23: 13-14
Do not withhold correction from a child. For if you punish him with a rod, he will not die.  You shall beat him with a rod and deliver his soul from hell.

#4 It shows kids that you love them:

             Proverbs 13:24
He who spares the rod hates his own son, but he who loves him disciplines him promptly.

#3 It can rescue them from catastrophe:

            Proverbs 19:18

Discipline your children while there is hope. Otherwise you will ruin their lives.

#2 It’s painful…but promising:

            Hebrews 12:11

No discipline is enjoyable while it is happening—it's painful! But afterward there will be a  peaceful harvest of right living for those who are trained in this way.

#1 It’s God’s Way:

            Proverbs 3:11-12

My son, do not despise the LORD’s discipline, and do not resent his rebuke, because the LORD disciplines those he loves, as a father the son he delights in.
